The Impact of Mining and Quarrying on Ghana’s Economy

For most of Ghana’s history, the mining and quarrying industry has had a significant impact on its economy as well as shaped the country’s socioeconomic and cultural progress.

Ghana’s economy is expected to rise at an annual growth rate of 5.9% in 2016, supported significantly by the growth of its mining sector. Despite an unstable global market, Ghana’s economy and mining sector have had a praiseworthy recovery over the past several years with an average annual growth rate of about 6.9% and 8% respectively.1

Figure 1 illustrates that mining and quarrying production has increased at an average growth rate of 8% from 2009 to 2015. Total value-added production has increased from GHc 181.7 million (R683 million) in Q1 2009 to GHc 2056.5 million (R7 billion) in Q1 2015. If this production trend in Ghana continues, it is expected that total value-added production would reach approximately GHc 3016 million (~R11 billion) by 2016.
